A ‘specially commissioned film’ will be projected onto the Salford Civic Centre this June to mark the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings.
This moving image and music show will display ‘magnificent military footage’ from the era as a fitting tribute to those who served and fought for their country.
City leaders will also deliver special sermons at this free event which is open to the public on June 6 at the Civic Centre on Chorley Road.
Salford City Mayor Paul Dennett said: “On this significant 80th anniversary of the D-day landings, we honour the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought for our freedom. Their courage reminds us of the immense sacrifices made by those that gave their lives and to veterans that survived that day, many of whom have carried the scars of this harrowing battle through the rest of their lives.
“I am proud to stand alongside our armed forces community and residents of our great city, joining with the rest of the country to reflect on the legacy of D-Day landings that will never be forgotten.”
Guests will be able to enjoy a range of food and drink vendors at the event and guests are encouraged to bring their own chairs or picnic blankets to sit on and experience what promises to be a very moving commemoration.
The Ceremonial Mayor of the City of Salford, Councillor Tanya Burch said: “This is a very special anniversary and it’s important that we come together as a city to remember all those who fought and gave their lives defending our freedoms.
“Salford’s D-Day event is about recognising the work and sacrifice of our armed forces service personnel and their families and paying tribute to the heroes who fought for liberation 80 years ago.
“We can never forget those who sacrificed so much for peace and the pursuit of freedom in the face of tyranny.”
