A superb Callum Hendry volley from 30 yards was enough to see Salford City earn a draw on the road.

Neil Wood’s men were very much in the Lion’s den as Edgeley park packed in over 10,000 fans for Friday night’s crunch match to earn a playoff spot.

Stephen Mallan stung the palms of County goalkeeper, Ben Hinchcliffe, early on with a powerful shot from the corner of the box.

Shortly after, Stockport’s Akil Wright fired just wide of the post from the edge of the area on the volley.

County then took the lead after just six minutes, following some fine work from wingback, Kyle Knoyle, who beat three players to the byline and squared the ball to Connor Lemonheigh-Evans.

Evans, fresh from a brief loan spell at Notts County, poked the ball into the back of the net from six yards out with the outside of his boot, past Alex Cairns. His first goal for The Hatters.

County continued to pile on the pressure. Centre-forward, Paddy Madden, hit the post from six yards out after strike partner Kyle Wootton headed on a long ball.

Salford went into the break a goal down but were still optimistic that they could get something from the game.

Just five minutes into the second half, and a moment of quick thinking saw Salford City level.

Callum Hendry controlled a Jason Lowe throw in on his chest and hit a superb, dipping volley into the top corner of the County goal. All Hinchcliffe could do in the County goal was enjoy the best view in the ground of a stunning goal.

Meanwhile, Hendry slid on his knees in front of a crazed, sold out away end. The goal took Hendry to eight league goals this season, the most he has scored for any club in one season.

The Ammies very nearly took the lead, when a Stephan Mallan free-kick from 25-yards out flew inches wide of the Stockport goal.

Some plaudits should be given to Alex Cairns, who made a crucial acrobatic save from a powerful Callum Camps freekick from distance. The on loan keeper flew through the air to deny what was a fine strike.

Speaking after the game, Hendry said: “It was a tough game, we knew coming here that it was going to be a tough game. Our fans were amazing.

“If you’d asked me if I’d have taken four points from Stevenage and Stockport I’d have bitten your hand off!”

Salford remain in the last of the play-off places, but will be wary of the fact Bradford City are just two points behind with two games in hand.
