Salford secured a 3-1 victory over the travellling Doncaster Rovers at the weekend, with the Ammies looking to continue their promotion push.
Neil Wood’s side, residing eight points away from the automatic promotion, needed to leave with all three points to avoid being caught by Mansfield.
But with Bradford City getting a 2-2 draw against Hartlepool before the start of the fixture, it meant that three points wouldn’t move them unless Stockport dropped points.
Doncaster came into this game with only one win in the last five, but only sitting six points below the Ammies.
The game started with a fast pace from Salford, but it only took three minutes for a stoppage when Doncaster’s Tommy Rowe’s high-booted challenge collided with Luke Bolton.
The Salford winger could return, with his head tightly wrapped, and it was a good job he stayed on.
As in the 12th minute, Callum Hendry chased down Doncaster defender Joseph Olowu on the edge of the 18-yard box.
The defender who looked to panic under pressure lost possession, where Hendry was able to lay it into the feet of Luke Bolton who smashed it home for the lead.
But against the run of play, Doncaster was able to steal the momentum away from the Ammies scoring straight away with their first chance.
Luke Molyneux carried the ball well, and his pass found George Miller who was able to lift the ball into the roof of the net.
However, this didn’t stop the fast pace of Salford as both Luke Bolton and Louie Barry were able to cause issues down the wings.
And as Neil Wood’s side began to regain their momentum in the fixture Louie Barry, began to be more problematic cutting inside and throwing many attempts at the goal.
Although the long-range effort in the 37th minute from Stevie Mallan made the difference, with the shot having a lot of movement toward the goal.
And it was a horrible mistake by emergency loanee keeper Stuart Moore, that carried the ball across the line it was certainly a debut to forget.
With the home side going in at half time, 2-1 up it led to some boos coming from the away end directed to Head Coach, Danny Schofield.
But things only continued to worsen for the away side the Ammies mounting the pressure high up the field on the Rovers.
And in the 59th minute, Louie Barry carried the ball to the byline to find an alone Luke Bolton around the six-yard box for his brace.
This only added more frustration to the Doncaster Rovers support, with more chances being directed to their Head Coach.
With the game seeming to peter out, Salford held onto the ball well and attack with a threat coming from Luke Bolton.
The danger from the right wing forced yet another corner where Theo Vassel was unlucky not to extend the lead when the ball bounced off his standing leg.
Despite the dominance of the Ammies, Doncaster was starting to build some pressure on the home side.
In the 61st minute, George Miller was played through but decided to take it wide for a cross, much to the annoyance of the 1,026 travelling supporters.
And only a few minutes later, the Rovers forward was through again making the same decision, crossing the ball to the back post and forcing a corner.
However, that seemed to be the only danger Danny Schofield’s side created in the second half.
And with the final whistle blowing the Peninsula erupted in cheers as Neil Wood’s side continue their playoff hopes alive.
Salford will turn their attention to Stevenage, travelling to the Lamex Stadium on Saturday to stay in the top seven.
