A ‘POP UP’ Christmas DAB radio station has been set up in the unlikely location of Manchester Cathedral.
Manchester Cathedral Radio, MCR, has been broadcasting a unique blend of Christmas music since December 1 and will continue through to January 5.
The radio station is providing listeners with an insight into various events being held at the cathedral in the run up to Christmas. They’re hoping to broadcast a range of features and interviews with key members of Greater Manchester’s Christian community.
MCR, Manchester Cathedral Radio, is the creation of radio pioneer Mike Shaft, who has a long association with the Cathedral.
Mr Shaft said: “It never fails to amaze me how radio stations dig out the same tired old Christmas songs year-in, year-out.
“MCR will be different, with a far wider repertoire of Christmas music ranging from traditional carols to popular Christmas classics performed by artists such as Chris Rea, The Carpenters and Elton John. There will also be plenty of Gospel music, old and new for listeners to enjoy. There are some lovely songs and they’re out there if you know where to look for them.
“There will be some interesting chats with people of Christian faith and community in Manchester, such as we have a coming to faith feature every hour. BBC Radio Manchester has given us permission to use interviews that have been compiled over the years.
“Our target audience is anyone who wants to listen, we have given our self an edge with the christian content from the cathedral and it will never be drivel. We want this to be a permanent radio station so having six weeks on the air and in my opinion this offers us the chance to show how good a radio station we can be.”

Dean of Manchester, The Very Reverend Rogers Govender, said: “Manchester Cathedral is fully embracing the communication and media revolution of the 21st century. We want to remove all the walls and barriers of a church, which can date its origins back to the 11th century.
“People across the city, across all communities and even the country will be able to hear our inclusive message. Radio and the Internet are powerful ways to communicate with people of all faiths and MCR – Manchester Cathedral Radio will offer a truly unique soundtrack to Christmas.”
MCR – Manchester Cathedral Radio – will broadcast across central Manchester on DAB+ digital radio and will also be available online via the Tune-in app – http://tunein.com/
