WATERMELONS, big hair, spandex, and erotic hip movements – it must be Dirty Dancing. Fans of the 80s film flocked through the doors of the Palace theatre last week in a show that thoroughly entertained the majority of the audience.
Playing an exclusive five-nights-only show commencing October 10, Dirty Dancing certainly attracts the more raucous theatre goers. Plenty of hen do parties choose to start their nights out rekindling nostalgic memories and swooning over the character Johnny – synonymous of course with the late Patrick Swayze.
A stellar cast starring theatre veterans, Lewis Griffiths as ‘Johnny Castle’, Katie Hartland as ‘Baby Houseman,’ and Carlie Milner as ‘Penny Johnson’ – really encapsulated the magic of the film. Effortlessly filling the large shoes left by the iconic stars, the show has taken over £5.5million pounds since it hit the road in August.
Credit must also be given to the brilliant sets and supporting cast, in which the show wouldn’t be the same without. The female heavy crowd cheered, roared, and sung along with old favourites: Do You Love Me, Hungry Eyes, Hey Baby, and She’s The Wind – before raising the roof for Time of Your Life.
In a show that tested the patience of many of the Palace theatre staff – the production’s run was not without controversy after a brawl broke out between two males on its opening night, with many inebriated audience members being asked to leave during the show.
However, this did not overshadow the brilliance of this stage adaptation that will continue to entertain fans throughout its UK tour.
