WITH just six days to go until music fans flock to Heaton Park for Parklife festival, Quays News entertainment reporter Meg Lee caught up with emerging vocalist Love Ssega as part of our countdown series…
At the beginning of his musical journey, UK emerging talent Love Ssega was clearly bursting with excitement ahead of the eagerly anticipated Parklife 2016 festival.
“I’ve been to Warehouse Project back in the day which I like and obviously I know about all the factory records.
“It’s a great musical city so I can’t wait.”
With four songs released so far and collaborations with high profile bands such as Clean Bandit, Ssega explained his varying influences on his writing.
“When I started out writing a batch of songs for the first EP, the ‘Minds’ EP, I was listening a lot to of nineties New York sort of like new wave – well Tom Tom club – so that type of thing influences.”
Not only are there multiple influences to his music but also he commented on how he would describe his music to those unfamiliar with his work.
“I do like sort of funk, George Clinton and Parliament and that type of groovier thing so its got those elements to it but then some of my later songs that I’ve gone for are brighter, happier stuff.
“I just want to let it explode on stage.”
As he and his five-piece band make their way up and down the country it raised questions if any new music was on the horizon.
“Yes! Well the album I am writing,” he told us.
I’m writing a collection [of songs] and I’ve got quite a few in the bank so I should be releasing some new music soon.”
With an album seemingly on the way, he admitted that he cannot wait to test out his set on the Parklife 2016 New Wave stage.
On the same stage and bill as artists such as Jamie Woon and Kaytranada, Ssega has an invaluable opportunity to push his music and sound to a huge audience.
“I’ve only got three or four songs out at the moment but I can tell you I’m definitely going to be playing more than three or four songs in my Parklife set!
“See the band, see how it works live and then afterwards you can test it out and then I can put it out but there will certainly be more music coming.”
Ssega also confirmed he has a little surprise up his sleeve for all the Parklife goers…
“I do have lots of stuff coming but at the moment I’m enjoying it,” he said.
“The Parklife people will get to hear the songs I have ready before other people which is quite a sneaky way to do it so it’s quite exciting for me.”
