A Salford home care provider is gifting Christmas hampers to pensioners to prevent loneliness during the festive season.

Care Your Way North Manchester and Salford has launched its annual Present for a Pensioner initiative, creating festive hampers to support older residents who may be experiencing loneliness this Christmas.

Now in its second year, the project is already well underway, with staff assembling packages filled with gifts, practical items, and plenty of seasonal kindness.

Rebecca Whitehouse, a director at Care Your Way, said the idea grew naturally from the work they do supporting older people in the community.

“We see a lot of people in the industry we work in who are lonely at Christmas,” she said. “It is just something we do to give back, and to help combat loneliness within our community.”

The hampers, each worth around £35, are created using donations from local businesses, residents and generous contributors including Morgan Sindall and partners. They include items such as teabags, biscuits, blankets and crossword puzzles, small comforts chosen to bring warmth and joy to someone who may not otherwise receive a gift this festive season.

Christmas hampers are being delivered to prevent loneliness.

Care Your Way selects recipients through nominations and by identifying individuals within their own service who may benefit. The team is continuing to welcome nominations from the public.

For many pensioners, receiving a hamper is an emotional moment. “It is actually dead emotional,” Whitehouse said. “These people do not have anyone to spend Christmas with, so this could potentially be their only Christmas present. They are always over the moon and overwhelmed.”

The team hopes that through these hampers, no older resident feels forgotten this Christmas. Nominations can be sent directly to Care Your Way North Manchester and Salford.
