Crowds of Salfordians braved the cold to see Media City illuminated last night as Lightwaves Salford opened its annual free light-art festival.

The outdoor exhibition features large-scale artworks, ranging from digital projections to illuminated sculptures, many of which are developed in partnership with local artists and organisations.

Among the key contributors is the University of Salford, which has collaborated with Lightwaves for several years through both commissioned works and student-led projects.

Tamsin Middleton, project coordinator at the University of Salford, said the partnership offers valuable real-world experience for students.

She said: “We’ve worked with Lightwaves as a whole festival for a number of years, so we do commission for them for the artwork,” she explained. “We also have a module that our animation and computing students undertake that is like a live brief for them.”

A visual art display projected onto Dock10 Studios, Media City.

Middleton added that the atmosphere of the festival remains a major attraction for people visiting Salford.

“It’s quite a joyful festival. There’s a lot of light, colour and interaction, and it’s free, so it’s great. It’s very family friendly and it’s generally nice to be outside.”

The festival features a range of interactive and visually appealing installations, engaging with audiences of every age.
