Budding writers are being invited to the Working Class Movement Library for a miners’ strike poetry workshop hosted by poet and activist Matt Abbott.
Tickets have become available for May 15, where beginners or writers of any level are welcome.
The workshop will use a selection of poems from the 1984-1985 miners strike, including prompt and guidance from Matt, to teach techniques and skills for reflection and use of language to craft their poetry.
Using the emotional and impactful writings from the dark times of de-industrialisation, the workshop hopes to elicit powerful writing from its attendees
Matt, originally from Wakefield, was longlisted for the National Poetry Competition 2023 abd is one of the leading poetry educators in UK schools.
He received five star reviews for his stage debut of the spoken word Two Little Ducks. Matt attributes his coal mining heritage to his activism.
The Working Class Movement Library opened in Salford in the 1950s, acting as an archive now with 200 years of working class history. It aims to support and educate working class people, running events and courses such as the miners strike poetry workshop to allow attendees to interpret a core part of Northern history.
The workshop is free, tickets bought will be refunded minus eventbrite fees.
