Paul Rowley rues missed opportunities as Red Devils lose brutal elimination playoff - via Youtube

Paul Rowley took delight in Salford’s first win of the Betfred Super League season amid their off-field troubles, but is braced for another departure.

The Red Devils and Huddersfield Giants began the clash at the Salford Community Stadium both looking for their first points but the night decisively belonged to the home side, who ran out 23-10 winners.

And with the Salford head coach having to deal with another departure this week as Salford look to balance the books, with Brad Singleton following Marc Sneyd out of the door.

Rowley felt a sense of some normality after the difficult preceding weeks had paved the way for the win, he said: “Our week’s been really good, it’s been relatively normal, we’ve been able to concentrate on prepping and making sure our standards are at the level we expect them to be at.

“I think the consistency of the week transferred into the performance.”

The head coach continued: “The performance was good so, whilst it’s about winning this game, and winning and losing is important, to us the performance was the main thing.

“I’m really pleased for everybody, the whole club. It’s really rewarding.”

And Paul Rowley will be hoping for more of the same performances from the club, however, he admitted that entre Tim Lafai is leaving the club to head back home to Australia.

Lafai’s family situation was a key driver of the move, but the salary cap restrictions imposed on the club have also played a part.

Rowley said: “The noise has probably contributed to a feeling of being unsettled and, if you’ve got players who can’t play because of cap space, then it’s going to contribute to a feeling of frustration.

“Maybe it’s accelerated the decision. He goes with our best wishes and we thank him.

“He’s been good for us and we’ve been good for him. I hope he finds happiness back in the sun in Australia.”

And following Lafai’s decision to go back to Australia, he is hopeful that Nene Macdonald, who was again forced to sit on the sidelines, will stay.

Nonetheless, the Red Devils will have to turn their attention to the next fixture away against Wigan Warriors on Sunday 30 March.
