Salford Red Devils Womens’ coach and former rugby league player Dave Hewitt has reflected on his time at his new club.

Hewitt joined the Salford Red Devils Women’s coaching staff this month, as he begins his transition into coaching.

Recognised as an England academy prospect, Hewitt was often praised for his attacking skills and leadership qualities, which he is now putting into his coaching career.

He began his rugby league journey at St Helens before making significant contributions at Oldham Roughyeds, where he made 115 appearances, scoring 34 tries, and scoring 91 goals over six years. He also played for Sheffield Eagles, Rochdale Hornets, and Midlands Hurricanes.

In his new role with the Red Devils, Hewitt supports the coaching team in developing the attack strategy. Head Coach Mike Grady expressed enthusiasm about Hewitt’s appointment, highlighting his wealth of experience and leadership, which are already benefiting the team during pre-season preparations.

Hewitt said: “It’s different for me; I’ve played the game for 20, 25 years, 10 years semi-pro level, so it’s been a big difference for me, but I’m enjoying it so far, it’s a different challenge.

“You get in that routine of playing sometimes and get stuck in your ways. So to come into coaching it’s out of my comfort zone, but I am enjoying it so far.”

His extensive playing experience and leadership skills are valuable assets to the Salford Red Devils Women’s team as they prepare for the upcoming season.

He continued: “They’ve got massive potential, I think the spine’s really young we brought in Anna recently at fullback who’s going to add a real new dimension to our game.”

After a pre-season friendly against Featherstone Rovers the Red Devils will look to impress against the Sheffield Eagles on Sunday March 23.
