Broughton rugby club will be hosting a try-out event as they look for new players for the upcoming season.
The local rugby club will be hosting try-outs as their season ends, they are look to rebuild ahead of the new campaign.
The try-outs will be held on Wednesday 19 March from 7pm until 8pm, as the aim for an ambitious season.
Craig Barnes, vice chairman at Broughton RUFC said: “At the moment we’re currently coming towards the end of the season and rugby league has kicked in, so a lot of our players have now gone to play rugby league.
“The point of the try outs are so we can assess what type of players they are and see if they can fit straight into the team or if they need a little bit more work.”
The club are currently not expecting a large turnout however are looking forward to seeing familiar and new faces.
Barnes continued: “We’ve not had much feedback yet, but I know the usual lads are going down. So, we’re hoping for like at least double figures anyway.
“We just want someone who’s anyone who’s willing more than anything. (They) Don’t even need to be able to play rugby. We can teach him the basics. We’re just after people who are willing to play and give up the time to play.”
The club has had a tough time recently, especially last year, however this club is back and is ready to compete.
He continued: “So last season we actually didn’t get a team out in any of the leagues due to not having a team, this year we’ve got a team out and up until a couple of weeks ago we were we were unbeaten in the season.
“And we are currently in the semifinal of the cup. And looking to progress obviously to the final and we are looking for promotion.”
The club also offers support off the pitch as well as on it, as Barnes added: “Well, Broughton is what I like to call us as a family club, We’re not just there just for rugby with for everything.
“I say to everyone who joins, you’re not just joining a rugby team you join in a family. So, if you need anything support-wise in the club away from the club. We’re always there for them.”
And with new players being welcomed to the club, Barnes is excited for the upcoming season and hopes the squad can be bolstered due to these try-outs.
He said: “We’re not just excited for this season but we’re also already planning for next season as well. So, if we can start getting players in now and getting them to learn the trade of playing rugby, whichever position that they choose to play.”
“We can obviously enhance that and hopefully have a bigger squad for next season.
“If the numbers work out, we could potentially get two teams out. I look forward to it every season. This is my I think 28th year at the club, so yes, it’s not something that’s new for me.
“Hopefully we can we get the team back out next season,” he added.
