The general secretary of the shop workers’ union, has announced his retirement after seven years in the position.

Paddy Lillis, from Northern Ireland, has been a full-time official at the Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers for more than 35 years.

The trade union, which is headquartered in Salford Quays, Lillis officially is set to retire in July, having been elected to the post in November 2017.

After he announced his retirement from the position, he said: “It has been a real privilege to serve USDAW over the years, and I feel proud of what we have achieved together.

“My time as general secretary has brought many challenges, but I will be retiring with the union in very good shape financial and with growing membership.”

Dave McCrossen, deputy general secretary of Usdaw, is also set to retire in July alongside Lillis, having spent 35 years working alongside him in various roles at the union.

The union will announce a timetable for the election of a new general secretary and deputy general secretary over the next few days.

Usdaw is one of the biggest unions in the UK, based at the Voyager Building at Furness Quay in Salford.

The union has been providing advice and representation to workers since 1947 – and more information about the election will follow.
