Salford City’s four game unbeaten run has come to an end after losing 1-0 away from home to AFC Wimbledon.
The fixture was a close one with both sides having their eyes firmly set on promotion – starting the weekend Salford sat in seventh and the Dons in third.
And the competitiveness of the two teams was proved, both having numerous chances, only being separated by a Matthew Stevens 65th minute goal.
However, despite travelling away from home the Ammies were happy to share the majority of the ball – but that seemed to be okay for Wimbledon, who fired 15 shots towards towards the away sides goal.
Karl Robinsons’ side were tested numerous times throughout the fixture, and early chance from Jake Reeves called League Two Team of the Week goalkeeper, Jamie Jones, into action.
The save was to be the first of many, as the chances in the first half continued, with Jones being forced to make a second fantastic save in the 25th minute.
AFC Wimbledon’s Josh Neufville was able to come inside from the wing, before hitting a shot towards the top right corner.
The inform Salford City goalkeeper was able to stretch to reach the ball before clawing away for the corner, with the Ammies fortunate to go into halftime level.
However, it seemed that the pressure had spilled over for the travelling side – when an Ammies corner was defended well by the Dons, the ball spilled out to Salford’s Jon Taylor on the edge of the centre circle.
Although the midfielders’ heavy touch was quickly snapped up by Marcus Browne and Mathew Stevens, leading to a two on one break towards the Salford goal.
The option was open for Stevens to square the ball to Browne inside the box, however the inform striker was confident enough to fire a shot past Jamie Jones for the lead.
Celebrations began at Plough Lane, as Steven had scored his 16th league goal of the season, and put his side into second place.
However, despite the goal deficit and the celebrations Karl Robinsons’ side stayed resilient and were not going to make it easy for the home side.
This proved true when Hakeeb Adelakun was able to thread Cole Stockton through on goal, but the snatched chance was collected by the Wimbledon goalkeeper Owen Goodman.
And as Salford City continued to push for an equaliser, AFC Wimbledon were also unfortunate not to extend their lead.
Dons winger, James Tilley, was able to push as the Salford back line before cutting in and blasting a shot across the goal, bouncing off the post.
The shot struck the post leading to a defensive scramble before a narrowly wide shot by Josh Neufville was able to keep the score 1-0.
Both sides continued to have chances, however the two sides would remain separated by a single goal.
The defeat for Karl Robinsons’ has seen his side drop out of the playoff positions sitting in 8th position.
The Ammies will now have to travel to playoff rivals Port Vale and will be hoping to turn their form back around – with more information found here.
