Two Salford schools part of an academy trust are thrilled after being shortlisted for a prestigious award for their digital innovation.  

The Consilium Academies, which runs Ellesmere Park High School and Moorside High School in Salford have been shortlisted at the National MAT Awards 2025. 

The academy trust, which has has eight academies in the North West, North East and Yorkshire, has been shortlisted. 

The prestigious recognition highlights the technological advancements that have been made by the IT Department at Consilium Academies, with the aim of enhancing educational outcomes for students in the trust’s schools.

The improvements and key achievements include infrastructure updates, improved cyber security and budget efficiency.

As well as providing 400 new Chromebooks across the academies to improve staff efficiency and student efficiency.

The schools in the trust have also seen upgrades of 900 desktops, and investing in improving interactive learning environments.

These innovations have had a profound impact, transforming the digital landscape across the Trust and improving educational opportunities for all students. 

Following the developments, staff and parents have praised the changes, noting that “things are easier now” and that “it’s nice that things just work.”

The development for the students will be beneficial to the future education for all students.

And upon being shortlisted for the award, Joel Thornton is the Director of IT services within the MAT said: “It has been a privilege to bring a comprehensive digital transformation to the staff and students in our schools.” 

Joel, as a leader of the department, has paved the way for each school within the trust to be equipped with the most modern tools and resources to allow them to thrive in the digital age.

As he continued: “My team and I are very proud to have directly impacted our students’ engagement in their learning experiences and their academic results”.

The developments will improve facilities and services across schools, as  Michael McCarthy, CEO Consilium Academies acknowledged Joel Thornton and his department’s hard work.

He said: “The work of Joel and the IT team has transformed our provision across our schools, leading to much improved facilities and services, not only for our students, but for our staff too.”

Every aspect of the school has evidently been positively affected by the hard work of this department.

He added: “We are delighted to be shortlisted for this award which highlights the digital transformation we have made across the trust”.

The award will be a testament to Consilium Academies dedication to their schools in Salford and elsewhere, and the National MAT Awards 2025 will be taking place in Milton Keynes on 6 March 2025.
