A brand new series of workshops will be returning to Salford Museum and Art Gallery this February which will be open to people of all abilities.
The workshop that named ‘Life Drawing Late’ will be returning after a successful time in 2024, and will provide an opportunities for both experienced artists and total beginner to explore art.
The classes are aiming to provide those with a pleasant and accessible environment in which to improve your sketching abilities and spend a creative evening in a gorgeous gallery setting.
Illustrator and animator, Paul Pickford, will be hosting the workshop, with sessions running on Wednesdays from 6:00pm to 8:00pm and will be suitable for ages 16 years and over.
Paul Pickford’s passion for art began in childhood, inspired by comics and encouraged by his parents.
He studied at Eccles Sixth Form College and later at Manchester Metropolitan University, where he specialized in Illustration with Animation while his first work was published.
Paul had a solid background in illustration, but until Whitworth Art Gallery approached him, he had never considered teaching art.

Paul said: “They persuaded me to try and deliver some school workshops. I loved it!”
“I think about what I would want as a participant, which would be inspiration, practical advice, guidance, support, encouragement, fun, and the freedom to develop my own ideas and approach.”
He also highlights the unique atmosphere of the Victorian gallery at Salford Museum. He called it a “fantastic space” and praising the diverse range of participants.
“We get a super cross-section, from students and first-time artists to experienced and professional artists. We also get fantastic professional life models, a lot of whom are artists themselves.”
In addition to his workshops at Salford Museum, Paul recently finished a significant project in Eccles town centre that will shortly be revealed.
He said: “Commissioned by Wild in Art and Salford Council, I’ve been working with the local men’s mental health group, Talk About It Mate.
“I’m really proud of the work the group has produced, which has helped inspire and inform my artwork.”
As Life Drawing Late continues to bring creativity and connection to Salford, Paul hopes participants will leave with “inspiration and confidence to continue drawing for fun and relaxation.”
This session will include @ianlifemodel and it is expected to be a lively and inspiring start to the series.
Ian provides a distinct viewpoint to Life Drawing Late. He sees life modelling as both an art form and a tool for inspiring creativity.
With a background in music, writing, and theatre, he approaches each session with expression and purpose.
He continued: “Mostly, I hope that they leave feeling better than when they arrived, having been creative and focused for a couple of hours.
“I think life drawing is quite meditative and uplifting, and as the focus of people’s attention, I hope that they leave feeling I have done my job well, inspiring them to produce work they are pleased with.”
A variety of pencils, paper, and boards are available for usage, and the cost of the ticket includes all supplies. Participants can bring their own materials as long as they are ‘dry’.
The event will be priced at £10 adult and £7 for students and booking early is recommended to avoid disappointment – more information can be found via the Salford Museum & Art Gallery website.
