Women’s Rugby World Cup comes to Salford
The Women’s Rugby World Cup kicks off in August and September and some of the action is taking place here at the Salford Community Stadium.
The stadium has been home to the Sale Sharks since 2012 and was used in the premier 15s and premiership. It is one of the furthest north locations in the Rugby World Cup 2025 lineup.

Ryan Giggs’ restaurant in Worsley closes suddenly after ten years
A restaurant in Worsley owned by Ryan Giggs has closed its doors with immediate effect following more than 10 years of business.
George’s Restaurant Dining Room and Bar, owned by the Manchester United alumni, has reportedly struggled with rising costs following the cost of living crisis and struggles since COVID. Staff were alerted via a text message that they had been made redundant, with little explanation other than financial burdens.

Sounds From The Other City release festival lineup for 20th birthday
Sounds From The Other City have released their lineup of musicians and artists ahead of their 20th birthday this year.
The festival Sounds From The Other City will run on 4 May 2025, and will feature unique sounds spread across several venues. The Salford based festival will allow residents to enjoy the celebrations of “new music, local promoters and the off-kilter beauty of Salford, the overlooked other city to Manchester.”

Registrations open for Salford Quays’ dragon boat festival
The UK Chinese Dragon Boat Festival will return to Salford Quays in May 2025.
The event will kick off on Sunday May 25 with an opening ceremony hosting cultural performances such as Chinese folk dances, Chinese folk instrument performances, Tai Chi and Kung Fu. Over 30 amateur dragon boat racing teams will compete for the championship on the first day of the event, with the second featuring professional dragon boat competitions.

Disability charity wins contract to improve independent living in Salford
A disability charity have been awarded a contract to improve independent living for the community in Salford.
Blue Sky Brothers have been operating for over 15 years and have won a contract which will allow individuals in Salford to independently navigate their care and receive the right support. The charity will also provide essential tools for disabled people, such as information, advice and support.

The John Gilbert’s pub in Worsley offers a selection of craft ales including their very own self-brewed beer, Level Head IPA, which is gaining a lot of popularity.

Wayne Rooney sparks rumours after being spotted at Salford City
Recently sacked Plymouth Argyle manager and English football legend Wayne Rooney was pictured at a Salford City training session on Monday — sparking rumours as to why the former Manchester United striker might be at the ground.
The ex-Manchester United player was pictured with former teammates Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs, who are co-owners of the club alongside their fellow Class of 92 members Phil Neville, Gary Neville, Nicky Butt and David Beckham. The sighting of Rooney has been met with mixed reviews on social media.

Swinton Lionesses new sponsor to provide a “golden opportunity” for the 2025 season
Swinton Lionesses have welcomed a local business as a new shirt sponsor in the upcoming 2025 season.
Smarter Home 4U, a home renovation company, are set to become the club’s back-of-shirt sponsor this year. The decision came after the local business sponsored the Swinton Lions match ball last season.

Swinton Lions will face Rochdale Hornets in the second preliminary round of the 1895 Cup Clash
The game will be played on Sunday 16th February at 3p.m. Ticket Prices will range from £17 for adults, £12 for concessions, £7 for students and under 16s will be able to attend for free. The winner will earn a spot in the first round which will be played on the weekend of the 1st-2nd March.

Salford City B’s scored first by a lifted shot from striker Robbie Cleary, but couldn’t hold on to the victory as Kei Robinson and Zayne Blake secured the win for Derby County Reserves in a tightened affair.

Immersive historical exhibition to be hosted at the Salford Museum and Art Gallery
Residents in Salford will be able to experience an immersive historical exhibition that will explore the city in the 19th century.
The exhibition will be hosted by the Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society, with guests taking tours around a Victorian Salford street. The dimly lit, atmospheric street features a range of reconstructed shops, such as a chemist’s, a blacksmith, a grocer’s, as well as a period-style cottage and pub. The tour starts at 1:30pm on Wednesday 5 February.

Charity shop in Salford offers SEN students valuable work experience
A charity shop in Salford Quays has been offering students with special education needs work experience.
The offered experience will be open to students from Oakwood Academy, Eccles, a school for children aged 9-19 with special educational needs. The school has spent the last three years offering vital work experience to their students through their community store.

‘Splash-hit’ comedy The Shark is Broken heading to the Lowry
The Shark is Broken, a hit comedy show currently on a UK and Ireland tour, is coming to the Lowry theatre from Tuesday 4 February until Saturday 8 February.
The show dives into the drama behind the scenes of the creation of Jaws and is Olivier Award nominated. It stars War Horse’s Ian Shaw, as well as his father Robert Shaw.

New interim Executive Director appointed for Salford Children’s Services
A new interim Executive Director for Salford Children’s Services has been appointed, hoping to champion the young people of the city.
The new appointment by the Salford City Council will see Becky Bibby take the position of the new interim Executive Director for Children’s Services. Bibby will be taking over the role from Melissa Caslake, who vacated the role, and begin under the new role from today.

Salford Red Devils to face Midlands Hurricanes in the Challenge Cup Third Round
Salford Red Devils will kick off their season with a Challenge Cup Third Round fixture against Midlands Hurricane this weekend.
The ‘David and Goliath’ match-up will take place on Sunday with The Red Devils looking to book their place into the fourth round against ambitious league one side. The Red Devils will hope to vanquish the Midlands Hurricanes dream and fairytale story.

Salford legend’s funeral set to take place on 6th February
Community worker and advocate Mike Thorpe’s funeral date has been confirmed, with the service set to take place on Thursday 6th February.
Mr Thorpe, who was chief executive of the Broughton Trust passed away earlier this year at home, following a short illness. Requiem mass is set to take place at 10:45a.m. at St Luke’s RC Church, Swinton Park Road, followed by cremation at Agecroft Crematorium at 12:20p.m. Donations are encouraged to Salford 4 Good should people want to donate, and only family flowers will be welcome.

“She is my motivation”- Salford teacher to run London Marathon for childhood cancer charity
A teacher from Salford is running the London Marathon for his daughter, who has been diagnosed with leukemia.
Andrew Tobutt of Walkden Co-Op Academy is raising money for cancer charity Milly’s Smiles. Andrew’s daughter Darcie was diagnosed with leukemia in May 2023, which inspired him to run the Manchester 10k whilst his daughter was in hospital. The charity donates Milly Bags, which contain supplies to help those in need at a vulnerable time. Donations can be made to Andrew’s fundraiser here.

Tiaki Chan joins Salford Red Devils on loan from Wigan Warriors
Salford Red Devils have signed player Tiaki Chan on a loan deal from Wigan Warriors and will be joining the new 2025 roster.
Our first bit of Red Devils news for today for our rugby fans, French international forward Tiaki Chan will be spending the 2025 season in crimson red colours.

Salford City hoping to return to winning ways against Bromley
Salford City are hoping to return to winning ways as they prepare for their Tuesday night fixture against Bromley.
After a 2-2 away draw against Walsall at the weekend, the Ammies are looking to bounce back and put themselves back into play-off contention. The last time the two sides met Salford ran out 2-1 winners, all the way back in 2019, when both sides were still in the National League.
