A Salford radio station will be aiming to raise £500 with a 12 hour broadcast to raise money for a charity helping young women.
The event by Utter Radio will take place on January 29 2025 and lasts from 9am until 9pm and will be run by TV and radio production students from the University of Salford.
The broadcast will aim to raise money for The Girls’ Network, a charity who provide mentorship and support for girls and young women not only in Salford, but across the UK.
Throughout the charity broadcast, students will run an open mic session in the University of Salford Media City Campus foyer and will host activities throughout the day.
Utter Radio Station Manager, Shan Hackwood said: “We’ve done a charity event before and it was really successful, and it made a difference to so many people.”
She added: “There’s a lot of fun challenges. A nice little quiz between shock radio and Utter Radio in the foyer as well. Just things like that, its quite fun, quite upbeat. You’ve got to want to get people to donate.”
She continued: “The Girls’ Network basically provide mentors for girls aged 14 to 19 in less fortunate communities, helping them with their future and helping them feel more confident in themselves.”
She also said: “I hope that people can feel more seen and like they have places to go.”
The Girls’ Network started in 2013, and was created by two teachers after seeing the social barriers that young women face in their lives.
The charity began by mentoring 30 girls initially, but soon began expanding to help young women all around the United Kingdom.
The fundraising will aim to provide financial support to the charity to provide service to young women and pushes them to defy gender boundaries, stereotypes and helps them achieve their ambitions.
The Salford radio station aims to raise £500 during its broadcast through its Just Giving page which can be found here.
