A Salford councillor has given a cautious welcome to the inauguration of President Donald Trump.
Cllr Andrew Walters, who represents Kersal and Broughton Park, said it was important to remember that President Trump was elected through a democratic process.
“The United States remains the United Kingdom’s closest ally and a key partner in promoting shared values and global stability,” said Cllr Walters.
“While our nations have much to teach each other, we should also look to our own democratic traditions as an opportunity for reflection and growth.
“Ultimately, fostering mutual understanding and collaboration—both at home and abroad—will guide us toward a more peaceful and prosperous future,” he added.
Cllr Walters found himself stranded in Israel following the October 7th, 2023, attacks occurred in the country.
He gave a more enthusiastic response to the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, announced at the weekend, calling it a ‘a vital step towards peace and a reminder of how deeply disruptive and tragic war is for all involved.
“Nobody truly wins in conflict, and it is essential that we continue to support efforts for lasting peace, ensuring the safety and dignity of all people in the region,” he stated.
At the time, Cllr Walters said he was ‘as safe as I can be’ while desperately trying to find flights out of Israel. He arrived safely in Athens just over a week later.
