The brand new dance co-production of Carlos Acosta’s Nutcracker in Havana is coming to the Lowry this January.
The show will visit Salford as a part of their UK Tour, that included a week-long run at London’s Southbank Centre where they saw raving reviews.
The production that will be choreographed and directed by Carlos Acosta CBE, and will visit the Lowry theatre on Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 January.
The Cuban take on the festive classic will be set to an exuberant newly-commissioned version of the magnificent Tchaikovsky score.
The show will be arranged by Cuban composer Pepe Gavilondo, and will feature over 20 dancers from Carlos’ Cuban company Acosta Danza.
The traditional story will be hope to wow audiences, as it is being brought to life through ballet and Carlos’ unique style.
And will be accompanied by the spectacular video projection and set design by Nina Dunn, it will bring snow to Havana in a visually stunning spectacular treat for all.
The story will tell the story of Clara in her humble home in Havana, getting ready to celebrate Christmas with her family.
Clara is gifted a Nutcracker doll she embarks on the journey of a lifetime, to defeat the Rat King and into the world of the Sugar Plum Fairy accompanied by her Nutcracker Prince.
Throughout the performance with be shown vibrant displays of colours and culture in a ‘visually stunning spectacular’.
The influences for the show come from the international superstar Carlos Acosta, who was born in Havana, Cuba and trained at The National Ballet School of Havana.
After winning a succession of awards, including the 1990 Prix De Lausanne, he went on to dance professionally with the world’s most prestigious companies.
The superstar dancer was also recognised in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List and received a CBE in 2014.
Carlos later also received the Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Award from The Royal Academy of Dance in 2018.
Following a 28 year career that feature various of awards, Carlos decided to retire in 2016 – before setting his sites on starting his own dance company.
Through dance Carlos has been able to display his influence from culture, mixing his production with a vibrant combination of classical and contemporary, fused with Cuban elements of dance.
The performances of the show will run on Monday 27 January at 7:30pmwith the second show taking place on Tuesday 28 January at 2:30pm.
