A Salford community interest company aims to expand to help more disabled people lead healthy, active lives.
Beyond Empower has already supported hundreds of people with disabilities across Salford through its project #DoItDifferently.
The company founded by Ben Andrews helps those with disabilities to overcome the barriers to being more active.
Service manager Andy Banns said: “Beyond Empower has reached 100s of disabled people across Salford, supporting them to access activities and improve health and wellbeing, whilst removing barriers they may experience in accessing them.”
Disabled people can be disadvantaged when it comes to a healthy lifestyle as they face vast health inequalities which can worsen their condition and decrease their life expectancy.
Beyond Empower offers resources like an eight-week programme of support to identify and access activities of interest.
Andy said: “This time is used to build up a person’s or group’s confidence and motivation to attend independently.”
Inspiring stories on the website include the experience of 18-year-old Lewis, who has autism. After Covid, he became reluctant to engage in physical activities.
But a lifestyle coach was able to work with him, and navigate him round the exercises.
He continued: “We hope that this will encourage other disabled people to access the services or better still directly engage with the many organisations in Salford providing accessible and inclusive opportunities.”
There are lots of options around Salford, depending on the issues that individuals may be facing so Beyond Empower can use its expertise to people with a wide range of different disabilities and preferences.
