Salford currently suffers from very significant health inequalities, and average life expectancy levels in the city are generally lower than the national average.
The latest statistics show that Salford is falling even further below national averages of life expectancy in the city.
The average life expectancy in Salford’s most deprived areas for men is 10.9 years lower than in Salford’s least deprived areas, whereas, for women, the average life expectancy in Salford’s deprived areas is 7.6 years lower than in Salford’s least deprived areas.
That is a damning statistic for people in Salford, as the city only has a population of 270,000, meaning the most and least deprived parts of Salford will not be too far from each other.
A list of local authority’s male and female life expectancies has recently been published by the Office for National Statistics.
This list compares men’s and women’s life expectancy from birth between 2021-2023 and 2017-2019.
For males in Salford, the life expectancy is placed 23rd at the bottom of local authorities, with the average male life expectancy of 76.25 years between the years 2021-2023.
Whereas before between 2017-2019, the life expectancy was a year higher at 77.54 years.
Overall, both of these statistics are still below the national average of male life expectancy which is 79 years.
However, women in Salford do have a higher life expectancy than men but are still in the bottom percentile of the list produced by the Office for National Statistics.
Women have placed 39th in the bottom part of the list with their life expectancy being 80.85 years between 2021-2023.
This has only decreased by 0.16 (81.01) since 2017-2019, but women in Salford are still below the national average life expectancy in the UK by almost three years.
Comparing both the men’s and women’s statistics with the top-placing local authority, the difference is staggering.
The top-ranking place is Hart, and their life expectancy between 2021-2023 is 83.44 years, a whopping six years more than male life expectancy in Salford.
For women, Kensington and Chelsea sit highest with 86.46 years between 2021-2023. Their women’s life expectancy is nearly six more than Salford’s women.
