START building taken by Owen Howard

A Salford charity is making a significant impact on mental health by using creative arts as therapy.

Start, which supports around 300 members annually, offers programmes such as woodwork, pottery, and calligraphy, prioritising well-being over professional artistry.

The organisation, which has been running for more than 30 years, has a range of tutors and classes for patients to choose from, offering the opportunity to learn new skills, socialize, and enjoy the outdoors in the studio garden.

“Our goal is to provide a space where people can express themselves and find healing through creativity”, said Hannah Flint, development manager at Start.

“It’s about trying something new, learning a new skill, and discovering joy in creatives.”

Although currently only available by referral, the charity envisions becoming a community creative arts hub, increasing public access to its resources while continuing its commitment to breaking mental health stigma.

Hannah added: “We want to continue to preserve the ethos that creativity is important, that mental health and wellbeing support shouldn’t be stigmatized.

“We try to make sure people feel supported to come for the first time. For a lot of people, that’s quite a big step, coming somewhere new.”
