A mass open water swim has been organised for Salford Quays on New Year’s Day in honour of a man who died from an undiagnosed heart condition.
Uswim Openwater has organised a cold-water swim being held on New Year’s Day at Dock 9, MediaCityUK to raise money for The Aortic Dissection Charitable Trust.
Karen Smith, team leader, lost her brother Philip in 2022 when he suffered from a previously undiagnosed aortic dissection.
She was screened following his death and has since been diagnosed with an aortic aneurysm which is being monitored.
Karen said: “This year will be its 14th year and numbers have certainly grown over that time.”
Participants can make the choice between a 250-meter course for seasoned swimmers or a 100-meter dip for those who want the thrill.
The swim will run from 10:15am till 12pm, with entry being £25 for adults (16 and over) and £10 for young people (7-15yrs). They will be providing complimentary hot drinks and cakes for swimmers alongside swim caps and wet suits are available to hire.
They will also be holding a best dressed hat competition, asking people to get creative and flaunt their most outrageous hats.
Karen added: “We ask that everyone can swim even if they only want to take a dip. The water will be around seven degrees so it must be taken seriously. Children are welcome but only if they are with an experienced competent adult and they must stay in the dip zone only.”
