A cancer patient has launched a fundraiser with a customised calendar aiming to raise money for vulnerable patients at Salford Royal Hospital.

The fundraiser will be led through the Northcare Alliance, and will use the Calendar Girls photoshoot to raise money for fellow patients.

The fundraising effort has been launched by Jill Oxton, who has been diagnosed with level 3 type F Thyroid cancer.

In April this year, Jill spoke to Salford Now about the Calender Girls photoshoot that was the beginning of her funding journey.

So far in her fundraising effort, Jill has currently raised £2053 with the help of locals and friends in Salford.

The fundraiser has been extremely difficult but has aimed to raise money to support people struggling like her, as she said: “It has been really difficult I started because of what I went through being a single mom itself is so difficult I struggled to go to my appointments.

“I think that patients need to be taken care of through the whole process of their medical journey even if it’s to provide coffee and chairs because when I was done with my operation I was left on my own with no aftercare.

“I have to put my kids first and feed them she adds there’s going be someone out there that is exactly like me and maybe they can’t afford to take care of themselves. Even if I help a handful of people I feel so much better.”

The event was held by Jill at the Kersal club earlier this year, and was used to raise essential funds.

As she added: “We had collectors pots at all the shops and sold tickets for an event at Kersal club. Everybody in Salford pitched in for raffle prizes, local shops and businesses.

“I rang doors on the night of the event to sell tickets as well.”

Her efforts were well-received, with Swinton Lions also donating £500 to sponsor the calendar.

The fundraising effort ‘The Calendar Girls’ are from local Salford residents, and included individuals who having family members suffering from cancer.

Following the photoshoot, Jill continued: “I actually can’t believe I managed to do it!

“Everyone has managed to pull this all together. I just really hope after all this hard work that our calendars keep selling and that the people of Salford will help reach our goal of £5000.

“Some of the girls are old school friends they understood what I went through so it’s very encouraging.

“They have such a good heart and I wanted to do something positive to help other me and other people. On the back of our calendar is a thank you to everyone involved because without these people we wouldn’t be able to do any of this”.
