The location of Gizelle’s Grub off Lower Broughton Road

A Salford takeaway has applied for permission to continue serving food made from a shipping container.

Gizelle’s Grub, which is active on Deliveroo, has been operating as a ‘dark kitchen’ – a food business that members of the public cannot access.

It operates from the shipping container on a patch of bare land behind Lower Broughton Road but had previously operated without the correct permission.

The takeaway serves dishes such as mac and cheese, stir fry, burgers and a large range of meat and rice dishes.

Mr Shimon Yair Woodbridge, the applicant of the form, said he was unaware that he needed planning permission for the container – which he converted into the ‘dark kitchen’ – when he was contacted by planning enforcement whilst applying for a license to open late on weekends.

A recent food hygiene inspection, carried out on September 24 this year, rated the takeaway as ‘very good’ for its management of food safety and hygienic food handling, and ‘good’ for the cleanliness and condition of facilities and building.

Gizelle’s Grub currently has a rating of 4.5, with 11 reviews.

One positive review reads: “Excellent addition to Deliveroo, I didn’t add anything to my burgers, and they even tried to contact me to double check and also left a note, thankfully it was planned and all is good thank you! The food is different to most other places, much less greasy but still affordable.”

However, another, less positive review, read: “The portion size compared to the images at tiny. Paid for add one like cheese and bacon. None to be found. Taste was terrible. no seasoning and I actually feel a little I’ll had one bite and binned the rest. chips tasted a week old and re fried 20 times over.”

When contacted for a comment Mr Woodbridge stated: “This application is because I have converted a shipping container into an online kitchen in the back of my building, which, although it is a temporary structure, Salford wanted me to get planning for it.”
