The Lowry Theatre not only stands out for it’s incredible performances, but also for it’s commitment to being sustainable.

The theatre based at the heart of Salford Quays, has already taken a significant step to strengthen how environmentally positive they can be.

The Lowry are already have lessened usage of single-use plastic with initiatives such as selling cans of mineral and sparkling water and using plastic reusable cups.

This sustainable program has made a difference in it’s marketing efforts, as they have eliminated the need for mass paper use by reducing the 50 page-long brochure to a A5 fold over sheet of paper informing the public What’s On At The Lowry.

Additionally, the theatre has maximised the use of their set designs and props by reusing them so waste is minimised.

The theatre has also aimed to reduce their carbon footprint through their energy- efficient LED lighting throughout the building.

But their commitment extends beyond it’s own operations.

In a bid to encourage sustainability across the wider arts community, they encourage visiting companies to adapt similar practices to become more eco-friendly.

They offer artist workshops to encourage sustainable production methods across the industry and through the introduction of Green rider.

The Lowry has set the standard with guidelines to ensure their partners uphold the same environmental standards.

With that in mind, they are using local suppliers like Seven Brothers, Four sisters and other sustainable suppliers who aim for recyclable packaging and prioritizes plant based food options to reduce their environmental impact.

Additionally, Lowry has permitted Carbon Literacy training for employees, to raise awareness about climate impact which encourage them to implement green practices within their roles.

The goal is to have 100% of staff trained by 2025, which will promote collective action towards sustainability goals and enhance individual understanding.

Leading these efforts is EAST, Lowry’s Environmental and Sustainable Team, with their theatre Green Book.

The Theatre Green Book, has been used to drive the theatre’s green strategies to effectively cut down on carbon emissions and waste.

These are just a few of the many steps that Lowry are taking to become more environmentally friendly for future generations
