A Swinton primary school has welcomed plans to install a new puffin crossing nearby on Worsley Road.
The newly approved plans will see a new crossing on Fairmount Road, near Broadoak Primary School.
The addition of the traffic lights will allow residents and pupils to cross safely, and avoid any fears of the nearby road.
Staff at Broadoak Primary School have been petitioning for the crossing since the ‘lollipop’ patrol assisting pupils was axed due to council budget cuts.
Headteacher Karen Wild said she was particularly concerned as Worsley Road had become very busy.
She said: “When the crossing patrol was removed, parents resorted to walking kids to school where previously they would have walked independently.
“I am very pleased, and I think that the installation of the crossing is a positive move that will give back independence to children and confidence back to parents.”
The Broadoak Primary Parent and Teacher Association also welcomed the news as “really positive…for our school community and the safety of all families and children.”
The new installation will be three metres wide and 8.7 metres in length, an will ensure safer and more confident crossing by the school.
The new puffin or Pedestrian User-Friendly Intelligent crossing, will use traffic lights and sensors to make it safer for people to cross Worsley Road.
The crossings are controlled by sensors at the top of the traffic light, which detect when pedestrians want to cross and change the lights.
The date of the installation is yet to be confirmed, but updates will be available on Salford City Council website here.
