Post office branches

A campaign has been launched to save a Salford Post Office after it was earmarked for closure.

Earlier this week, the Post Office announced the potential closure of up to 115 branches and the potential risk of a loss of 1,000 jobs in the process.

One of the Post Offices named was the Eccles branch.

Eccles Post Office has been leaving its stamp on the community since 1932, with many residents using the office daily.

Ex-Salford Mayor John Mullen, has lived in Eccles for more than 50 years and has since launched a campaign to save the branch.

“Eccles is where I live, my family, my friends,” he said. “It is so important. It is a great place to live and has great, kind generous people.

“For many, it’s more than just a post office – it’s a vital community asset, a lifeline to those who rely on it’s financial services due to the absence of banks in Eccles.

“The Eccles Post Office holds a special place in the heart of the community.

“What a slap in the face if they take away this vital asset.”

Currently, the petition has more than 800 signatures, but John says it is vital for 1,000 people to sign it as he wishes to present it to the council tomorrow.

Local Eccles residents have expressed their concern with regard to the closure, with many outraged at the Post Office and their decision.

One resident, Mike Iyer, from Monton, said: “I think it’s ridiculous. I am a treasurer of a Church, and in my time, five branches of banks have closed. So if they close this, the next place is Manchester.

“This is just going to make it worse, Eccles has gone downhill anyway it used to be a thriving town and you know, the motorway split us in half. It’s just going down the pan to be honest.”

The opinion that Mike had seemed to resonate with another resident, Kelly, who has lived in Eccles for 25 years,

“I don’t use it that often but you quite often see some of the older generation and the sort of more vulnerable people going in there. There have always been long queues outside there and everyone in Eccles is really worried about it closing for those people.”
