club legend Marjorie Parkin - Salford Red Devils

Salford Red Devils have paid tribute to an employee who worked at the club for more than 30 years.

Club legend Marjorie Parkin, who died last month, joined the club as a waitress in the Willows Variety Centre and restaurant in 1977.

She was then tasked with washing the team’s kit and took on cleaning the changing rooms following training and match days.

Over the years the club became ingrained in her life.

Her family shared: “She often worked in freezing conditions (as it was winter rugby at the time). The shirts back then were all thick cotton and weighed a hefty load when wet and full of mud.

“She’d have to put them in a bath first to soak them before trying to wash them.

“She regularly brought them home to wash as the machines were far from reliable.”

Throughout her time at the club, Marjorie performed various roles, including working in the club’s offices.

She retired in 2007 aged 66.

Her family said: “She made many great friends including staff, supporters and players and missed the camaraderie when she finished.”

Her funeral will take place on Wednesday, November 13, at St Luke’s Church, Liverpool Street, Salford.

The service will take place at 1pm, and will be followed by her burial at Agecroft Cemetery.

The family has invited anyone who knew Marjorie from her time at the Willows and within the club to attend.

Marjorie’s contribution to the club during her years of service was a significant part of Salford RLFC’s history, and she will be remembered for her dedication and work over the years.
