As Remembrance Sunday approaches, Salford is preparing to commemorate the lives lost in conflict this weekend.
Over the remembrance weekend, numerous parades are being held across Salford in memory of those who died in active service and civilians across the two world wars and further conflicts.
The parades are organised by the Royal British Legion veterans and Armed Forces serving personnel, with the Royal Naval Association hosting additional events of remembrance for the navy in particular.
John Coxon, 79, of the Pendleton Branch of the Royal Naval Association said: “On Friday morning we have a children’s remembrance service on Peel Green.
“Then, on Saturday we will be at the Agecroft Memorial site to commemorate civilian death from when an aircraft crashed on the Irwell.”
The service that will be led by the mayor, will visit the memorial site at Agecroft Cemetery and will commences from 10.45am.
The memorial site service, will be used to commemorate three separate elements of the two world wars.
First, a wreath will be laid honouring the fallen soldiers of the city, then another in memory of civilian lives lost during the Blitz, with a cross planted for the previously mentioned crash of a Lancaster Bomber on the River Irwell.
Later, attendees will congregate at the Merchant Navy Memorial at 12pm to commemorate the loss of life in the Merchant Navy in particular.
Mr Coxon added: “We have few members left who have seen service, no serving veterans from World War Two. A lot of us are lucky in our acts of service to not have served in wars.
“We share the usual thoughts of ‘we will remember them’.”
Road closures are planned for each event across the area, a list of each site for the parades is available here with a map too.
The events will look to commemorate the lives lost in conflict, and will take place over the weekend.
