Salford Red Devils’ Nene Macdonald delivered another standout performance as he helped lead Papua New Guinea to victory in the Pacific Bowl.
The 30-year-old, who has been a key player for Salford since joining the club last year, was named Player of the Match for his dynamic display on Sunday night which led to a win over the Cook Islands.
Macdonald, starting at fullback, wasted no time making an impact. He created the opening try, assisting Elijah Roltinga, before finding himself on the scoresheet himself with a powerful run from dummy-half to extend PNG’s lead.
His second try came in the second half, an emphatic solo effort that showcased his strength and speed, further sealing the win for his side.
The Red Devils’ versatile back had an impressive game, running for 174 metres, breaking 11 tackles, and adding two tries to his tally. His performance summed up the attacking threat he brings to both his international side and Salford.
As a centre or fullback, Macdonald has been a constant danger for opposition defences, and his recent form bodes well for the Red Devils in 2024.
New Salford signing, Esan Marsters, also featured for the Cook Islands and impressed with some key contributions, picking up an assist.
While Marsters showed his potential, it was Macdonald who took the spotlight, continuing his excellent form following a Player of the Match display against Fiji earlier in the tournament.
With Papua New Guinea now facing New Zealand in a crucial promotion/relegation match next weekend, Macdonald’s form will give the Kumuls confidence.
Salford fans, meanwhile, will be eager to see their powerful back in action next season.
