Swan Lake - Lowry Theatre

The Lowry theatre is set to host the reinvention of Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece, as Swan Lake comes to Salford this November.

The iconic ballet will arrive at Salford Quays in celebration of its 30th anniversary tour, as the most successful dance theatre production of all time.

Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake will be on stage at the Lowry between November 19 and 30 November, hoping to capture audiences with its whimsical display.

The performance has been described as thrilling, bold, witty and emotive, and well-known for its shattered tradition.

With Matthew Bourne making the bold decision of replacing the female corps-de-ballet with a menacing male ensemble.

The ballet first staged at Sadler’s Wells in London in 1995, before capturing the hearts of audiences all over the world.

The play is a take on Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s ballet that premiered in 1877, and soon became one of the most popular ballets of all time.

The reinvented ballet has since featured on both at the West-End and Broadway, which has seen the performances collect numerous accolades over the years.

These include the Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production, as well as three Tony Awards for Best Director of a Musical, Best Choreography and Best Costume Design.

The Lowry stage will be privileged to host the reinvented masterpiece, that will be performing in Salford before its eight-week annual Christmas season at Sadler’s Wells.

Ahead of the 30th anniversary, Matthew Bourne said: “It’s hard to believe that our Swan Lake is now 30 years old.

“And even harder to acknowledge that we are now casting most Swans and Princesses who were not even born at the time of the show’s premiere.

Many dancers have grown up with this production and dreaming of one day dancing in it, so I am particularly excited to announce this line-up of young performers.”

He continued: “I know from experience what a life-changing experience this show has been for previous casts and how it has inspired new audiences for dance throughout the world.

I am therefore truly thrilled to welcome the next generation of swans and swan watchers as we celebrate three decades of our Swan Lake.”

Tickets to the event range between £40 to £60 in the Lyrical Theatre – where tickets can be found here.
