Black History month

A Salford organisation celebrated its eighth Black History Month event at Swinton Masonic Hall last weekend.  

The event hosted by Women with Wings was used to celebrate black excellence in and around Greater Manchester.

The weekend display was hosted on Saturday 26 October, and was held at Swinton Masonic Hall from 10am to 4pm.

The event was hosted by the organisation Women with Wings, who have been been supportive for women to get into training, employment and self employment.

The celebrations featured performances and collaborations with charities that support women, and showcased handmade and woven products created by women as part of the ‘All Things African’ organisation.

Hamida Mbaga, the founder of “All Things African,” is from Tanzania and is dedicated to supporting and empowering talented African artists.

She helps them earn a living through their creations, which include art, crafts, jewelry, clothing, footwear, and more.

Hamida’s organisation primarily works with widows and various artists from Africa, and selling their products to a global market, that generate funds to support their children’s education and daily living expenses.

She said: “Women with Wings and All Things African work together because our mission is that when we empower the women, we empower the whole family.”

“I am proud of where I come from and networking with the right people such as the ones at this event will only make you grow as person and those you support.”

The event also featured various performances, including poetry by J Ahmed that highlighted the significance of Black history, along with entertaining dances as attendees gathered.

As well as serving home-made East African food to all the guests that was prepared by Fatima Masinigiry and several other women during the event.

The organised event was a significant celebration of black excellence and seemed to be a success as Jasmin Bahkre, founder and CEO of Women with Wings said: “This year especially is about celebrating the excellence of Black people.” 

The organisation was founded in 2017 and has since supported over a thousand women with finances, their well-being, mental health, and more, and has been supportive to many, as Jasmin continued: “Even if you are not Black and you come to this kind of event, there is something that you can take back with you.

“If it is a product that you buy or to take part in the culture, that means something.”

The event was a huge success and offered a celebration of culture, whilst also empowering women throughout.
