An exciting poetry show will be presented by Mike Garry next week that will hope help those with learning disabilities.
The event that will be held at the Eccles Library and will use the arts to widen opportunities for young people.
The hour long show will see Mike Garry read the poem ‘Soundbites’, in collaboration with the nonprofit Steppingstones Creative Organisation.
The non-profit will work with people with art to support the personal, social, and expressive development of young people with additional needs.
Working across Greater Manchester they have been very supportive for groups between the ages 10 to 25 in the Greater Manchester area.
The purpose of the organisation is to ensure that young people with special needs are given a voice through art.
The event will be hosted at Eccles library and the public reading will be held on Monday 21 October from 1pm to 2pm.
The poem ‘Soundbites’ was created during a dance and drama workshop, collaboration with Mike and Salford Uni Dance Department, where they explored ‘moments in our lives’.
Mike Garry has been performing poetry since 1995 all over the world and been on continuous tours with John Cooper Clark since 2011.
He has had his experience of performing in prisons, mental health units, and children’s homes and is passionate about bringing live poetry to places it wouldn’t normally reach.
And the show in Eccles will be no different, as it will hope to inspire various young people.
Working on the show Mike shared his experience of the collaboration, he said: “It was a great experience sharing the memories and feelings, held by the group, which this project unearthed.
“A camping trip with her father, a sunny trip to the beach.
“We are really looking forward to hearing the reading in a public space.”
Mike continued: “The theme is looking at who we are and things in our lives. During the school holiday workshops at Eccles Library and New Adelphi Theatre, we explore moments in our lives.
“It’s giving their events worth and putting them in a space where they can share them in an open space.”
The event will take place between 1pm to 2pm at Eccles Library, and tickets to the show will be free.
