The Castle Community Centre founders have raised money for refurbishment through a walk along Hadrian’s Wall.
Judy and Dave Usher, a couple who founded the Castle Community Centre in Eccles, undertook a 10 day, 100 mile walk to raise money for the building’s renovations.
The couple walked coast to coast along Hadrian’s Wall, between Bowness and South Shields, as a celebration of their 30th wedding Anniversary.
The couple decided to use their anniversary celebrations to attempt a tough challenge whilst also giving back to the people who use the community centre.
The money raised will be contributed to the building that currently The Castle and Ivy Park Community Association and Patricroft Community CIC.
The Castle Community centre was formed 15 years ago, becoming a safe space for families and young people in Eccles.
The centre arranges activities and events as well as being a safe space for many young people in the area.
The decision to walk the length of Hadrian’s Wall was chosen by the couple instead of a relaxing break for their anniversary.
Judy Usher said: “We absolutely love history and walking, so it seemed like the perfect choice.”
The couple also see Hadrian’s Wall as a reflection of their own work and be reminded that their “castle is also a place of safety”.
In total, the couple walked 113 miles and a total of 303,500 steps.
Judy Usher said “We managed it, that’s all you need to know” when explaining the difficulty of the walk.
The trail saw the pair reach a total ascent of 6,648 feet, and the efforts were rewarded with their JustGiving page raising a total of £4,300 so far.
The pair intend to use the funds donated to renovate the Castle Community Centre.
As Judy continued: “The centre is in need of some work, we want to redecorate the landing and stairs and redo the kitchen.”
The Ushers founded the community centre when they moved to Eccles.
After 15 years in the area they are still dedicated to the work they do to help others: “It’s a passion of ours to see lives change and to see families and people grow.”
