breast cancer

A community hub in Walkden will be hosting an afternoon tea event this weekend in aid of Prevent Breast Cancer.

The event will be hosted at the Salford Action Community Hub on the Saturday 19 October in the hope of raising money.

The event has been set up Gemma, who is currently living with stage four breast cancer.

Gemma unfortunately discovered that she was diagnosed with breast cancer in February 2023, and it only seemed to get worse earlier this year, as she said: ” “The cancer spread to my ovaries it was classed as stage four cancer.

“Hearing stage four was the scariest thing I have ever heard.”

However, she spoke positively and looked at it as “no longer seen as a death sentence” with the developments in breast cancer prevention.

Following her diagnosis, she shared on her blog that “it’s almost like grieving in a way.. I’ll find myself thinking about the future, sometimes just something really mundane.”

She continued to add that she has a continuous “internal battle” of “I might not live that long” and “don’t be daft of course you will.”

She described this as being “draining” but sees a solution in “being kind to myself… and surrounding myself with those I love, as well as walking and lots of visits to the beach.”

Gemma chose the charity Prevent Breast Cancer to raise money for, as it is the only charity in the UK solely committed to predicting and preventing breast cancer.

And despite the worries and fears that she may have, she has been very vocal in sharing her story on her blog “Titivate – My Breast Cancer Blog.”

Throughout her blog she documents her journey living with breast cancer, and is “determined to be open and honest” on her journey in order to help other people going through a similar experience.

She also encourages her followers to check for lumps and irregularities around there bodies.

Gemma was also able to showcase her willingness to raise money competing in fun runs and recently inspiring others as she participated in a 15,000ft sky dive for the charity.

And it seems that she will continue to do the same with a less ‘daredevil and thrillseeking’ charity afternoon tea.

The afternoon tea will start from 11am, and will move gently through the afternoon until 2pm.

Guests who wish to attend will have to £5 per person, with all the funds going to Prevent Breast Cancer.

The event is providing delicious cakes, a glass of Prosecco (or tea/coffee), bingo, tombola and Tropic will also provide treatment demonstrations and products too.

The ticket purchase also enters you into the draw to win a hamper jam packed full of goodies.

Tickets cost £5 with children’s tickets being free, you can buy yours here.
