World Mental Health Day - provided by Cedarwood Digital

A recent study has found that Salford ranks tenth for the average number of searches for therapy and counselling across the UK.

The research by the Open Study College was shared as part of World Mental Health Day which aims to encourage people to talk openly about mental health and show that it matters.

The annual celebration on October 10 hopes to de-stigmatise issues around mental health, such as the use of therapy.

More than 3.5 million people – 6 per cent of the population – have contacted NHS mental health services.

The research compiled by the Open Study College measured the number for all monthly search terms that relate to either therapy or counselling per 100,000 people.

Wolverhampton had the most monthly searches with an average of 897.

Salford had 396 per 100,000 average monthly searches for therapy-related terms and counselling-related terms.

Robbie Bryant, head of education and development at Open Study College, said: “This data highlights the increased normalisation of mental health awareness in our society, with thousands each month searching for therapy or counselling-related terms.”

Generally people were more likely to search for therapy-related terms rather than counselling terms.

Figures showed that on average across the UK, “therapy” is searched 21,640 times a month, compared to second “counselling” with 18,220 monthly searches.

The difference is that a therapist is more likely to help with more rooted difficulties that affect a person’s life, while a counsellor is often used for a bereavement or something that isn’t associated in the past.

Today marks the celebration of World Mental Health Day, and encourages everyone to come together to talk about mental health and promote a positive outlook on mental wellbeing.
