Walking Netball sessions are set to be underway in Swinton this week with England Netball running the newest activity.
The new activity will take place at Moorside High School in Swinton, with the the sport encouraging players to participate but at a slow pace.
The game will hope to encourage players to join in the more inclusive version, adapting the rules for all their guests from any sporting background.
The slower paced action is designed to protect the joints and will give players the opportunity to rejoin the sport they once left behind.
Led by England Netball it will be an exciting opportunity for residents in the surrounding area to socialise and join in the sporting activity.
Abbey Barry, 28, Officer for Greater Manchester Netball Development, explained why many should get involved: “When you say ‘Walking Netball’, a lot of people will think it’s slow, but it can have a competitive edge to it.
“A lot of women in particular when they get older, feel like sport isn’t for them and they can’t participate but actually when they come to Walking Netball, they can still do it.”
The sport will be beneficial for physical health, but will also have a variety of mental health benefits for players, as she explained: “The Walking Netball groups nationally are known for being the most social groups.
“After the daytime sessions in particular, participants will go to a cafe and stay for an extra half an hour to grab a cup of coffee together.
“There’s a real community feel that is within Walking Netball and we call it the netball family,” Abbey continued: “The biggest feedback we get is that it is allowing the participants to feel useful again.”
The sessions begin tonight (October 2), visitors will be able to visit the weekly sessions that will run between 7pm and 8pm in Swinton, with Abbey encouraging as many to come along as she said: “As long as there’s fun and laughter, then it’ll be a success,.”
England Netball also holds other netball sessions, Back to Netball, Netball Now and Men’s and Mixed Netball. Each session is open for all abilities, you can find your local netball session via the session finder.
