Mind in Salford is hosting its first Salford business network event to focus on mental health in the workplace.

The event at the Peninsula Stadium, the home of Salford City FC, hopes to improve workplace well-being and workplace attitudes around mental health.

This year’s World Mental Health Day will encourage businesses to celebrate the theme of wellbeing at work.

One in 6.8 people experience mental health problems in the workplace, and other surveys suggest that mental health issues account for 51% of all workplace illnesses.

Emily Norman, strategic communications lead at Mind in Salford, said: “That means 51% of long term sick leave is due to stress, depression and anxiety.

“It’s really common, and something that needs to be prioritised.”

As she continued: “All local businesses in Salford are welcome, we’re hoping for a real variety.

“We think that focusing on workplaces will have a ripple effect on the wider community, which is essential in the current mental health crisis we face.

“We all need to be stronger together.”

She added: “People need to know that they are in a place that really cares for them. We’re focusing as much as we can on individual resilience and the strength that people can find within themselves.”

The charity also recognises that it is okay not to be okay, and hopes to encourage the wider spread of support across the city.

Emily said: “When someone is unfit to work, we want the workplace to reflect that that’s okay they’re supported, and taken seriously.

“We’re trying to enforce a mentally supportive workplace, from the leaders within businesses, but also through members of the team.”

The business event on October 10 from 10-11.30am, will also provide opportunities for attendees to meet the team of Mind, and hear from guest speakers who include Annabelle Pryce, from Keolis Amey Metrolink (KAM).

The event will focus on the importance of mental health, as well offering a “fantastic” opportunity to try and spread, strengthen and grow partnerships with businesses in the local community.
