Nick Ryan with the Manchester Select player and rugby veteran, Chris Bamber to play in rugby showdown

A team of local rugby heroes will be gearing up to play rugby with the aim of raising £10,000 for The Christie Charity.

The team led by ex-Salford Academy player Nick Ryan will be set to take on the GB Police Rugby Team on the Sunday 29 September.

The event that will be held at the Manchester Regional Arena in the Etihad Complex, have held an initial release of 600 tickets.

With the charity event hoping to raise money in honour of those close to them affected by cancer, with all donations going to The Christie Charity.

The Christie Charity is dedicated to  improving cancer outcomes and enhancing the quality of life for patients and their families.

The event will offer the players to raise awareness and vital funds for the charity, being personally close to fellow rugby veteran, Chris Bamber, whose wife was recently diagnosed with terminal cancer.

The team that has been formed by Nick Ryan, owner of the Manchester-based recruitment firm The City Recruiter, has rallied his team together to take on the GB Police Rugby Team.

With the Police Team only just coming back from their tour of Australia,  it promises to be a tough game for the opposition.

Nick began playing rugby at the age of 10, and he shared his excitement about returning to the game after being sidelined for years.

He said: “Rugby has always been a passion of mine, and using it to support The Christie Charity, with the backing of The City Recruiter, makes the experience even more meaningful.

“These matches are our way of raising funds and awareness, all while coming together as a community to enjoy some fantastic rugby.”

The event will kick off at midday with a women’s match between the Keighley Cougars and GB Police, followed by the men’s game at 2pm.

Tickets are available for the event here, with adults tickets costing £5 and children’s priced at £2.

And it won’t just be the rugby on offer for the spectators, with fans having the chance to win raffle prizes such as hospitality boxes at Wembley and Anfield.

Guests will be able to raise additional funds for The Christie, with children’s games, food and drinks as well as a DJ on offer.

With the goal being to raise over £10,000, Lisa Clark, corporate fundraising manager at The Christie Charity said: “Events like these not only raise essential funds but also help to spread awareness of the vital work we do.

“We are incredibly grateful to Nick Ryan and the teams for their dedication,” she continued: “We wish the teams the best of luck in their matches and hope everyone has a great day out.”

Already raising over £2,500, the event seems very promising to reach its intended goal of £10,000, with access to the JustGiving Page being found here.
