Former Portsmouth defender Haji Mnoga has signed to Salford City on a one-year deal.

The 22-year-old Tanzanian international joined The Ammies as a free agent, having been released by parent club Portsmouth upon the expiry of his contract in May.

Mnoga spent last season away from Fratton Park on loan at National League outfit Aldershot Town, where he played a pivotal role in the team’s impressive run to the third round of the FA Cup.

The full-back started in Tanzania’s three Africa Cup Nations group stage games in January, playing all 90 minutes as the Taifa Stars battled to a historic 0-0 draw with DR Congo.

The young defender returns to the fourth tier, where he spent the first half of the 2022/23 season on loan at Gillingham.

“It feels really, really good. It’s been a long window so I’m happy to get this over the line now and I’m really excited to get going,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to it to be fair. The last time I came here it didn’t go as well as expected so I’m looking forward to it. I’m looking forward to kicking on and doing well.

“I had a nice conversation with the manager. He said he’s excited to work with me and I’m excited to work with him as well. He seems like a manager that can really push me and get the best out of me.

“I’d say I can bring pace, I can bring power. I like a tackle. I’m a defender who likes defending but I also like playing and I like getting forward and contributing to attacks for the team.”

Salford City have been one of the busiest League Two clubs in the transfer market this summer, having brought in fourteen signings as manager Karl Robinson looks to sculpt the squad in his image.

Robbie Cleary, Ben Woodburn, Dan Chesters, Tom Edwards, James Chester, Matthew Young, Jamie Jones, Jon Taylor, Cole Stockton, Tyrese Fornah, Josh Austerfield, Stephan Negru, Kylian Kouassi and now Haji Mnoga have all arrived, and more deadline day deals could follow before the transfer window closes at 11 pm tonight.
