The premiere of the brand-new production As I Am Naturally by performance artist Tania Camara is coming to The Lowry this September.
As I Am Naturally, which explores themes of identity, touch, memory and healing, will be premiering at The Lowry from Thursday September 26 to Friday 27?
Delivered in English, Portuguese and Cape Verdean Creole, this new production from performance artist Tania Camara features a beautiful blend of compelling spoken word, dance and live music using the traditional style Batuku. The show aims to transport audiences from the urban landscape of Salford to the island of Cape Verde.
“The river calls to me, calls me to this place. To wash, to give, to surrender. The river flow washed away what had become of me and then I stomped the violence. I opened my hip, and my torso became loose, unhinged. My voice became free, I broke the silence and my voice echoed. My cry became a song, my stomp the rhythm; I became me… As I am Naturally.”
Tania Camara said: “This show is an invitation to come together and listen and be present in difficult conversations.
“It’s about telling stories of a journey of self-love, discovery, empowerment and strength in community through Batuku. It’s about the moment we come together and fly in the rhythm of the txabeta and the movement of the torno and ride the wind as the once caged bird sings her song of freedom.”
The show has been developed whilst Tania Camara has been part of The Lowry’s ‘Developed With 2022-2024’ programme.
Antonia Beck, Senior Producer: Artist Development at The Lowry said: “Tania is an exciting local artist and it has been great to see the show take shape through our artist development programme over the last 18 months. We look forward to sharing the show with our audiences.”
