The family of the “remarkably friendly” Julius Matera have launched a moving appeal for information months after his body was found in Salford.

At around 2.35am on Thursday December 7, officers attended a property on Great Cheetham Street West in Broughton and found the body of Julius (43) after searching the surrounding area of the property.

At a press conference on Friday (July 26) officers detailed how they now believe Julius had died over a month prior to the discovery of his body.

Detective Chief Inspector Rachel Smith from our Major Incident Team said: “We believe that Julius lost his life on the evening of Friday October 13 or the early hours of Saturday October 14, that was just a few days before the half term break of October last year.

“We believe there are people in the community who may know what happened to Julius and why.”

The family of Julius Matera launch appeal to establish how Julius lost his life.

Julius was reported missing on October 24 2023 after he had not been seen for several days at his place of residence in Eccles. Greater Manchester Police recorded Julius as a high-risk missing person and launched an investigation to find him.

Six months after the discovery of his body in Broughton his aunt June Matera is urging anyone with information into her nephew’s death to come forward.

Paying tribute to Julius, his family said: “Julius was remarkably friendly, considerate, respectful, funny, and adventurous.

“He was always ready to help when he could.

“He had such an adventurous spirit and a curious mind that made him want to explore and discover things in his own special way with a keen ambition in current affairs and commentary.

“Julius was an active local community member who enjoyed the company of others and was never a lonely person.

“We all miss his contagious laugh.

“He had a way of making people smile even in the toughest of times and is remembered for that smile and a chuckle that captured his joyful spirit.

“If there is anyone in Manchester or anywhere else who knows anything about his last hours, please contact the police and try to help them affording him justice and let his soul find peace.”
