New plans have been submitted to demolish the student towers on Belvedere Road and replace them with two 28-storey tower blocks.
The proposed development near the Salford Precinct would provide up to 1,858 bed spaces for students in Salford. The 28-storey Block A would provide 810 bedrooms for students and Block B would provide 675 rooms with a second six-story wing housing an extra 100 beds.
According to a planning document the current buildings, Eddie Colman and John Lester, are ‘dated’ and ‘unable to provide the quality of accommodation expected by students.
This application follows the scrapped plan to build a third 24-storey tower block and refurbish the existing blocks. The planning document claims that the new plans are ‘sensitively designed’ following the feedback from local residents.
There are 59 car parking spaces included in the plans which could be accessed from Meyrick Road to the north. This site currently holds more than 100 parking spaces, however according to the planning document this ‘exceeds the existing demand’.
Students will be expected to use public transport as the main mode of travel as the site is close to Salford Crescent Train Station and a number of bus routes.
The proposed development has been designed to ‘revitalise the site’ and provide an enhanced and improved offering of ‘much needed’ student bedrooms for the University of Salford, according to the planning document.
