Agecroft Cemetery to host open day to showcase its history

There will be an open day at Agecroft Cemetery tomorrow (June 8) to showcase its history and “clear up any misconceptions”. 

Residents will be able to see “what goes on behind the scenes” at the public cemetery with a range of tours from 11am – 3pm on Saturday.

Jacob Beaver, Bereavement Services Officer, said: “People sometimes think they know what happens and what goes behind the scenes, which might scare them or worry them.

“It’s kind of about beating those misconceptions and just allowing people to feel a bit more comfortable.”

The restoration group, The Agecroft Chapel Restoration Association (ACRA), will be attending the event to discuss the group’s progress so far.

Te group aim to restore the chapel, which was built circa 1903 and used up until the 1980’s when the building fell into ruin.

Glenn Kennedy, Spokesperson for ACRA, said: “We’ll have boards on display showing plans of what the chapel will look like once the restoration is completed.

“We’re losing a lot of Salford’s heritage, people don’t realise that before our eyes, these things are going. We decided that when we set up we wanted to do something to give back to the community and preserve (it).”

The open days features a heritage tour of the grounds from 11.15am till 1.15pm and access to the grave registers from 11am – 3pm.

There will also be staff available throughout the day to answer questions, including the grave diggers who will be on hand to answer any queries.

The voluntary group, Friends of the cemeteries, will also be there to answer any questions and explain what they do. The group, which was founded in 2000, aims to provide a safe and pleasant place for people to visit and pay respects to their loved ones.
