A Worsley women’s football team have raised almost £5,000 for an upcoming match following their coach’s recent cancer diagnosis.
Worsley Wanderers will play a match against each other on Monday (May 13) at AFC Monton’s pitch off Worsley Road.
The match is raising money for their coach, Mike Keane, 61, who has been diagnosed with terminal cancer. Mike is due to start his treatment next week with The Christie Charity so the girls are raising as much money as they can.
Katy Clay, 28, from Worsley, is the manager of the team and said the donations have been “so heartwarming”.
Katy added tearfully: “It’s nice just to honour him completely and give him this chance where he can actually still be a part of us once more before he starts his treatment.
“Mike has been a part of us for a couple of years now, he’s the father in law to Amber, one of the girls. He’s always been involved with the team and he’s just been a huge support.”
Mike helped Katy out when she first started managing, having never done it before.
Katy added: “Mike was always on the sidelines giving me tips, helping us out, sometimes he’d step in and manage the team if I was away.
“Really we just want to show our appreciation to Mike and everything he’s done for us. There’s not many men that give up their Saturdays, Sundays and Monday nights and he just loves us as a team, you can really feel it from him.”
Katy and the team were never expecting to raise the large sum that now sits at £4,825.
“Me and Megan who’ve been organising it were expecting maybe £200-£300”, she joked.
“Within a few hours (of setting up the JustGiving page) we were nearly at £1000.”
Katy said the team and the local community are “doing everything they can” to bump up the donation to £6000 by Monday.
Kick off for the friendly match starts at 6.30pm.
