22 tennis courts have reopened across eight parks in Salford as part of a refurbishment project costing more than £660,000.
Salford City Council has invested over £206,000 to ensure that quality tennis facilities are available for the local community.
The refurbishment came after the council and the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) agreed to ‘breathe new life into local park tennis courts across the city’.
£456,091 of the funding towards the refurbishment project has come from the UK Government and LTA Tennis Foundation’s Park Tennis Project.
The park courts that have been refurbished are: Albert Park, Boothsbank Park, Buile Hill Park, Eccles Recreation Ground, Lightoaks Park, Parr Fold Park, Princes Park and Victoria Park.
The project is part of a nationwide investment by LTA Tennis Foundation and the UK Government. They aim to refurbish public tennis courts across Great Britain and open up the sport to more people.
In an effort to encourage Salfordians to pick up the racket, Salford Community Leisure will be managing the courts and We Do Tennis will be delivering coaching in all eight parks.
Weekly free tennis sessions for all ages and abilities will also take place, with equipment provided.
Danielle Tudor, Community Facilities Manager at Salford Community Leisure says there are now facilities in place for people who “genuinely want to play tennis”.
Danielle added: “In the past, the tennis courts were taken over by kids playing football, which is fine, but there’s plenty of spaces across the city for children to play football.”
“Whereas obviously, we’ve only got a limited amount of tennis courts.”
“It’s really positive that we’ve now got these tennis specific spaces to allow young people and people from different backgrounds to access decent tennis courts and play with their families and friends.”
“It’s just absolutely fantastic to be able to provide these affordable, exciting new opportunities.”
All courts are Pay & Play and available for £4 per hour per court, with some courts available free of charge.
