As the beginning of Ramadan starts, there are plenty of ways for Muslims to celebrate their holy month in Salford.
During this month, Muslims all over the world will be abstaining from all food and drink from sunrise until sunset.
In Salford, around 5 per cent of the population is Muslim, meaning a sizeable proportion of people within the community will be celebrating Ramadan as of today.
To mark the start of the month, the Salford Civic Centre was lit up green to represent the religion and to support the Muslims in Salford who will be fasting throughout the entire month.
The centre will also be hosting and organising a free Iftar this Sunday at 5pm which will be open to everyone.
The hosts of the event said in a Facebook post that the event will aim to “bring together Muslims, Jews and people of other faiths and none, closer together.”
Mohammed Amin, Co-Chair of the company, also stated that: “When the fast opens, we’ve organised the prayer facilities for the Muslims where they can go to pray.
“Then basically there is Asian food, basic vegetable, curry and rice. And we will organize some kosher food for those Jewish people who have to have kosher food.”
The event emphasises that it is accessible and open to all people, regardless of gender and religion.
Last year, MP Afzal Khan, who attended the event spoke about fasting in Islam and stated how Ramadan helps to “recharge your batteries.”
There are plenty of ways for all Muslims around Salford to break their fast, especially for people who may be unable to celebrate with their families. For students, the University of Salford will have their ‘Faith Centre’ doors open every evening for Muslims who are wanting to break their fast.
The Centre also allows students to bring their own food which they can have on the first floor and it is located on the campus.
The community in Salford is also full of various different halal restaurants which will all be providing Iftar to allow Muslims to break their fasts this month. Below is a map of every restaurant in Salford that will be partaking in special Iftar meals.
