Second Rower Sam Stone scored a brace as Salford Red Devils scrapped past the Castleford Tigers with a 26-22 win to get there first victory of the Super League 2024.
This Sunday, Salford started strongly as Stone scored the first try of the match inside ten minutes when Marc Sneyd put him through to cross over to put the Red Devils in-front.
Hooker Amir Bourouh then dived over from close range a few minutes later to put Salford 12-0 up after only 12 minutes. However, the tigers hit back scoring twice with the first coming through centre Sam Wood and then Jack Broadbent sliding over the try line on the Salford left hand side making the score 12-10, giving Salford narrow lead.
However, the Castleford resurgence did not last long as Nene Macdonald restored Salford’s advantage to 8 points just before half time as he latched onto Marc Sneyds Bomb before going over the line.
After the break, Stone then crossed again to extend Salford’s lead to 14 points making it 24-10 before Castleford fought back through tries from Joe Westerman and Liam Horne separated by Marc Sneyds penalty goal taking the score to 26-22.
Salford had two sin bins in the second half as Kallum Watkins and Jack Ormanroyd both spent 10 minutes on the sidelines however the home side held on for a crucial first win of the season.
Half back Marc Sneyds performance received praise for his outstanding kicking game while centre and new signing Nene MacDonald earned the man of the match award and was described as a “shining star” by coach Paul Rowley.
Salford travel to high flying Hull Kr this Saturday (March 2) looking to build on this victory with kick off at 17:30.
